ANIMAL CONTROL

Beginning in July 20, 2009, residents living in the City of Fort Pierce are required to register their cats and dogs (Ord. Sec. 4-50).  After this date, all cats and dogs are required to wear registration tags (Ord. Sec. 4-51).  Additionally, anyone who breeds cats or dogs and offers puppies or kittens for sale must obtain a breeder’s registration (Ord. Sec. 4-53).

The ordinance requires cat and dog owners to pay an annual registration fee for their pets. This registration fee is greatly reduced for sterilized cats and dogs.

Licensing your dog or cat protects them and allows animal control officers to return stray pets to their owner while avoiding impoundment fees that would otherwise cost owners more than $165.

Annual Pet Registration Fees

Each sterilized cat or dog
$10
Each non-sterilized cat or dog
$75
Breeders
$100
Replacement Tags
$5

Failing to follow this law will result in a fine
of up to $500

Financial Aid for Low Income Residents

Low-income pet owners may be eligible to receive a grant to reduce the cost of registration and provide sterilization
at no cost.
Applications for these grants are available
through the City Clerk and the Police Department.
