Patrol Support Unit
The Patrol Support Unit, supervised by Sergeant Robert Curry, is comprised of three divisions: traffic, crime prevention and school crossing guards. In addition to the sergeant, the unit is staffed by two traffic officers, three crime prevention officers and eight school crossing guards.
Traffic
The Traffic Unit is not just responsible for enforcing traffic laws; the unit’s responsibilities include investigating vehicle related accidents, including Traffic Homicide Investigations and DUI (driving under the influence) checkpoints aimed at deterring impaired drivers. The unit also utilizes various forms of speed measuring devices to identify and apprehend all other of traffic violations. The unit has initiated or participated in a number of programs intended to prevent accidents and make the streets safer to include the "Click It or Ticket program" and the "You Drink, You Drive, You Lose program
Crime Prevention
A police officer dedicated to crime prevention is deployed to each district to proactively approach crime by working with community organizations, conducting home and business safety surveys, and to act as the district’s liaison for the department's Neighborhood Watch Program. There are three officers assigned to the unit
School Crossing Guards
Parents of students attending schools within the city can be confident that their children who walk to school will arrive safely, knowing that they are being helped across some of our busiest streets by the school crossing guards. Eight crossing guards are assigned to six locations near the schools, twice a day when the children are on their way to and from school. The position is an important link in the safety of the city's children.
Reserve Police Unit
The Reserve Unit is also under the command of Captain Robert Sandifer. These nine officers are an integral part of the department and provide a valuable service to the community. They are citizen volunteers who must attend state mandated training the equivalent to a full-time officer. They also must pass a thorough background investigation and successfully complete the department's Field Training Program before assuming the full authority of a police officer
