While the Public Information Office handles Public Records requests, primarily, from the media, the Office of Professional Standards is responsible for requests to review personnel files and internal affairs investigations. The department's Records Department is responsible for all other requests.

Florida State Statute 119, the Public Records Act or Sunshine Law, governs the release and access to public records throughout the state.

If the time necessary to gather, assemble and copy the requested documents is greater than 1/2 hour, it will be considered "extensive," as the Chief has defined it. There will be an hourly cost of 135% of the hourly wage of the employee doing the necessary work, and it shall be billed in 1/4 hour increments to the person or business making the request.

State Statute 119.105 Protection of victims of crimes or accidents.

Police reports are public records except as otherwise made exempt or confidential by general or special law. Every person is allowed to examine nonexempt or non confidential police reports. No person who inspects or copies police reports for the purpose of obtaining the names and addresses of the victims of crimes or accidents shall use any information contained therein for any commercial solicitation of the victims or relatives of the victims of the reported crimes or accidents. Nothing herein shall prohibit the publication of such information by any news media or the use of such information for any other data collection or analysis purposes.
