Sergeant Graham Kelley manages Support Services, which is comprised of public service aides, animal control officers and school crossing guards. This department is staffed with 3 animal control officers, 5 public service aides, and 8 school crossing guards.
In an effort to enhance the uniform police officers' ability to respond to more pressing calls, the Public Service Aide Program was created. A fairly new concept for the department, aides have proven to be an invaluable asset. The purpose of the civilian position is to provide assistance to patrol officers by taking written reports that do not require an officer's presence. The aide also investigates minor traffic crashes and has the authority to issue traffic citations.
Animal Control Officers
Animal control responds to a variety of complaints of animal problems, animal abuse and bites. In addition to the many calls involving dogs and cats, the animal control officers may be dispatched to any call about domestic or wild animals, birds, and reptiles. Animal Control officers work in conjunction with the Humane Society and participate in educational programs for children and adults on animal related issues.
To report animal control issues call 911.
School Crossing Guards
Parents of students attending schools within the city can be confident that their children who walk to school will arrive safely, knowing that they are being helped across some of our busiest streets by the school crossing guards. Eight crossing guards are assigned to six locations near the schools, twice a day when the children are on their way to and from school. The position is an important link in the safety of the city's children.
Three full-time civilian animal control officers provide 24 hour response to emergency calls.
