[ARCHIVED] St. Lucie County Youth Ride Transit for Free This Summer

summer ride program_thumb.jpg

St. Lucie County Community Transit and the Treasure Coast Connector will offer free rides during summer break to any County resident under the age of 18 with a valid student ID or St. Lucie County Library card. Children under 12 must be accompanied by an adult. St. Lucie County is establishing this program in partnership with the Roundtable of St. Lucie County, which is implementing the National Gang Model to address crime through prevention, intervention and suppression.

By providing free transportation June 4 through Aug. 14, St. Lucie County students will have easy access to summer reading programs at local libraries, summer jobs, and recreational sites such as sporting events, pools, music and drama activities – all of which provide opportunities to keep students engaged in structured activities. Additionally, students will benefit from learning how to use the fixed-route transit system and having a sense of freedom.
“We feel that there are a number of excellent programs provided throughout St. Lucie County, whether it be the showing of a movie or a story time at one of the five county libraries or open swim at one of the three county pools. We want to make sure that students are able to get to these locations,” said St. Lucie County Board of County Commission Chair Paula Lewis. “We are working with a number of partners including the St. Lucie County School District and Children Services Council to make sure students know that this summer that they can ride the bus for free.”

For more information about the Treasure Coast Connector, including bus routes, fares and transit stations, call 772-464-RIDE (7433) or visit: http://treasurecoastconnector.com. To obtain a library card, visit http://library.stlucieco.gov to find a branch near you.
